WORKS BY THE PÉCS WORKSHOP PRESENTED IN ANTWERP

Pécs Workshop: Hungary's Parallel Avant-Garde
May 17. - July 8. 2018

Philippe Piessens shows works of Pécs Workshop, the Hungarian neo-avant-garde art group that had been active between 1968-1980. The artworks by Ferenc Ficzek, Károly Hopp-Halász, Károly Kismányoky and Sándor Pincehelyi give an overview of the group's multidsciplinary work, experimental endevaours and joint projects, showing pieces from their early geometrical period and their lens-based, conceptual practices. Ferenc Lantos's works accompany the presentation of the Pécs Workshop, showing the master's influence on his apprentices' burnt enamel-works.

ACB GALLERY AT FRIEZE NEW YORK

acb Gallery presents works by Imre Bak (b. 1939) in Spotlight's section SP26 booth.

The presentation at Frieze NY focusses on the period spanning from 1967 to 1974, when two groups of works determining Imre Bak’s subsequent career unfolded. In the footsteps of American minimalist and hard edge painting, his image-objects composed of stripes and fields of intense colors led Bak to examine visual representation as a construction. By studying the semiotics of shapes and colors and their representational potential, he arrived to conceptual art, which directed his painterly focus to the analysis of the combination of basic geometric motifs.

WHO DID I BUILD THIS FOR? - PERFORMANCE OF THE LEGACY OF LILITH GROUP
04.04.2018. 7 PM, acb Attachment

Known for their unusual approach to the emancipation of women, the Legacy of Lilith artist group (Mrs. Andrea Júlia Fajgerné Dudás, Bea Kusovszky and Orsolya Oláh) premiere a new performance on the 4th of April. The laundry soap bars used in the performance have already been in daily use by the Legacy of Lilith group: the artists use these to wash their brushes and countless memories are associated with their scent and shape. For their exhibition Heroes’ Wives, they replicated a section of the stone tile pavement lining Heroes’ Square using laundry soap tiles, and during their performance In Clean Hands, they used them to wash their hands clean in a body tray.
Once again, the soap bars will be put to use in a different context: the three artists wall themselves up with bricks of soap.

For more information please visit the Facebook event page of the performance.

KATALIN LADIK RECEIVES THE LENNON ONO GRANT FOR PEACE

acb Gallery proudly announces that Katalin Ladik is one of the four recipients of the 2016 Lennon Ono Grant For Peace. The biennial award was inaugurated by Yoko Ono in 2002 in the memory of John Lennon. This year, besides Katalin Ladik, Ai Wei Wei, Anish Kapoor and Olafur Eliasson will receive the award in the frame of a ceremony in Reykjavík on Lennon's birthday, on the 9th of October. Previous recipients of the award included Doctors Without Borders, The Centre for Constitutional Rights, Pussy Riot and Lady Gaga among others.

Katalin Ladik started her career as a poet, and by the end of the sixties, phonic poetry and performance had become equal genres in her practice. Her visual and sound poetry, performances and body art are based on the intermedial reinterpretation of body and language, sound and visuality. As a professional actress she played major roles in numerous theatre plays, TV-films and movies.

From the seventies, a central element in Katalin Ladik’s performances was reflection on the woman’s role. She was the first woman performer in Yugoslavia to use her own body in performances as an autonomous medium equivalent to text and sound. Sometimes concealed by outrageous or erotic costumes, masks and props, her body and the ritual series of actions carried out by it, or the elements referring to sewing and tailoring in her collages used as scores for her vocal performances, all questioned several aspects of the traditional female roles constructed by the male-dominated society. Ladik’s feminist approach enriched the avant-garde discourse with a radically new position not only in Yugoslavia, but – owing to her regular performances and the unofficial network of avant-garde art – in Hungary as well. Ladik gained international recognition with her vocal performances and recordings already in the 1970’s, her performances are presented at various art events and festivals throughout the world. In addition to a number of books in Hungarian, volumes of her poetry were published in English, French, Italian, Serbian and Croatian.

Since 1992, when she settled in Hungary, Katalin Ladik has been living parallel in Budapest, in the island of Hvar (Croatia) and in Novi Sad. In 2010 The Museum of Contemporary Art Vojvodina in Novi Sad presented her oeuvre in a retrospective show, accompanied by a comprehensive book. In April 2016 acb Gallery presented her solo exhibition with the title The Voice of a Woman. In 2017 Ladik will be an exhibitor at the documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens. Her works can be found in collections such as the MOMA in New York, the MACBA in Barcelona, the Ludwig Museum – Museum of Contemporary Art in Budapest, the KONTAKT and the Verbund collections in Vienna.
