Description

acb Gallery | booth S10

acb presents a solo presentation of Márton Nemes’ (b. 1986, Székesfehérvár, Hungary, lives and works in New York) medium-reflective works created specifically for the upcoming edition of The Armory Show. The young artist, who will represent Hungary at the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024, has been elaborating in recent years on the expansion of the genre of painting, its extension to other media and the crossing of its boundaries by incorporating the effects of complementary but seemingly contrasting pairs. Alongside the reflective-matte, frame-pictorial field, gestural-digital, industrial-expressive, sterile-sensual, still-moving and painting-theatrical scenery visual counterpoints, there are more abstract, universally valid conceptual pairs that generate the tension inherent in Nemes’ painting: presence-absence, outside-inside, empty-full. The presentation continues his series originated in 2022 − Heartbreak Paintings and Meta Paintings − accompanied by pieces from his latest series Superposed Paintings (2023) and completed with a sculptural extension of his experimental painterly practice, placed in the axis of the booth.
