Description
The title of Igor and Ivan Buharov’s (Kornél Szilágyi and NándorHevesi) new solo exhibition, i still don’t understand the wholething, borrows from Ottó Tolnai’s eponymous poem, encapsulating the essence of the duo’s artistic journey – ajourney that is equally self-ironic and self-critical. It is adeclaration of playful incomprehension, an acknowledgementof the inherent absurdity at the heart of their anarchistic, anti-methodological approach to art. This reflection on uncertaintyand the limits of understanding is both the driving force and theend result of their creative process, one that constantly upendstraditional expectations and defies neat categorization. For thirty years, the Buharovs have forged their own unique pathwithin the tradition of radical avant-garde and neo-avant-gardeart, rooted in the anarchistic, dadaist, and surrealist movementsthat have long been central to Eastern European art history.Their work is defined by its deliberate refusal to be confined toany one genre, often embracing absurdity, deconstruction, andplayful subversion. Their artistic position is as much aquestioning of the world as it is an ongoing exploration of form, process, and meaning. The very act of creating – through video, painting, graphic work, installations, and performances – is forthem a radical questioning of artistic convention and culturalnorms.
This anniversary exhibition at acb Plus marks a celebration notonly of the Buharovs’ influential artistic language but also of theplayful, absurdist philosophy that has guided them throughouttheir career. The exhibition features a dynamic selection ofseminal works alongside new pieces, including light boxes, paintings, graphics, deconstructed furniture, and videos.Together, these works build on the notion of “Buharovism” – aconceptual and performative framework that is always in flux, never static or final, always questioning and undermining its ownpremises.
In keeping with the duo’s ongoing commitment to interaction andexchange, the exhibition will also be accompanied by a series oftalks, performances, and screenings – moments where theboundaries between art and audience, artist and viewer, areonce again put into play. These events will unfold not only withinthe walls of acb Gallery but will extend beyond, marking theanniversary as both a celebration of their past and aperformance of their continued defiance of the artistic statusquo. In the spirit of i still don’t understand the whole thing, thisexhibition is an invitation to engage with the absurdity andcomplexity of Buharovism – a celebration of the unknowable, theunclassifiable, and the irreducible chaos of creativity that hasdefined the duo’s entire artistic project.
