Description

After nearly three years, Péter Szarka (1964) returns with a solo exhibition at acb Gallery. Over recent years, the artist has been working according to an abstract painting program that exploits viscerality and expressivity, while also resting on a conceptual foundation, as modularity and controlled chance play a decisive role in his creative process. Szarka’s new paintings appear not only denser and more expressive than ever before, but also more simplified from the persepctive of material experiments. The leitmotifs of the new works, such as thick linear systems, chromatic scales, and suppressed axonometric forms also seem to stand out more on the paintings prominently than ever.

The title of the exhibition Emergence refers to the process also known from scientific terminology through which the artist becomes an observer of his own paintings. Szarka seems to assume the role of an ornithologist observing the unfolding complex flight patterns of a flock of birds. With this gesture, Szarka makes yet another attempt to distance himself from his paintings and to dissolve himself as an artistic ego.
