Description
This spring, acb Gallery expands with a new project space: the acbIMRE BAK space, established in honor of Imre Bak (1939–2022), a distinguished painter and a leading figure of Hungary’s postwar neo-avant-garde movement. As a key member of the Iparterv Group and thePest Workshop, Bak consistently advocated – both through his art andhis activities as an organizer – for the idea that art must move beyondtraditional spaces to engage more directly with audiences, therebycontributing to the advancement of visual culture and design thinkingwithin broader society.Throughout his life, Bak also regarded it as a vital mission to sustain and transmit the legacy of figures such as Lajos Kassák, Dezső Korniss, and the European School. He sought to maintain a living connectionwith emerging talents, offering them inspiration and professionalsupport. The new acb IMRE BAK space aims not only to commemorateBak Imre’s artistic contributions but also to ensure that his spiritcontinues as a living tradition. In conjunction with the opening of thisspace, acb Gallery will launch an annual lecture series dedicated to Bak Imre, focusing on contemporary painting and visual arts theory. As part of the Bak Imre Lecture Series, each year a world renownedscholar will be invited to deliver a theoretical lecture, activelycontributing to the stewardship of Bak's intellectual heritage. The mission of the acb IMRE BAK space is twofold: first, to showcaseartistic practices that blur the boundaries between traditional appliedarts (such as ceramics, glass, and jewelry-making) and autonomousfine arts; second, to present installations built on various technicalmedia, including video, sound, photography, and media art. The spacewill focus on site-specific installations and projects that explore theintersections between contemporary art and design. Thanks to itsintimate scale, the acb IMRE BAK space offers an ideal environment for innovative, site-responsive artworks and provides an importantplatform for young and emerging artists.Opening this spring, the space will function as a hybrid platform, combining the traditional roles of a gallery with experimentalinstallations, material research, and site-specific artistic interventions. It seeks to foster collaborative thinking, experimentation, and dialogue. The space is envisioned as a dynamic, ever-evolving venue, responsiveto the context of the works exhibited – ranging from speculative
