Imre Bak (1939 – 2022)

acb Gallery is deeply mourning Imre Bak (1939-2022), an outstanding figure of Hungarian contemporary art, who passed away on 23 December 2022 at the age of 83. In accordance with his will, Imre Bak will be remembered in the company of his latest works on the 5th of January (Thursday) between 6 and 9 pm at acb Gallery. István Hajdu, author of the monograph on Imre Bak, will say farewell at the memorial evening.

Imre Bak left his mark as no one else on the past half century of Hungarian painting. His painting program has been both varied and unparalelled in its consistency, producing works of invariably outstanding quality throughout his career. His exceptional sensitivity, humbleness and kindness helped him navigate all along.

We quote his own words as a farewell: "I have been thinking for a long time, like Santarcangeli wrote, that art has the following function: 'The artwork assumes the awareness of death, the biggest horror of all, and it is born in order to conquer the horror of this unknown terrain.' ”
