Description
Art Basel in Basel starts on the 19 of June: Following solo booths showcasing the works of Katalin Ladik and Selma Selman in 2023, and Agnes Denes's public installation titled Honouring Wheatfield – A Confrontation in 2024, acb Gallery is once again pleased to announce its participation in this year's edition of Art Basel in Basel. Bosnian artist Selma Selman's new installation will be featured as part of the Art Basel Parcours 2025 program and is based on the emotionally evocative iconography of cemeteries. The artist will transform the St. Clara Church in Basel into a captivating experiential space that engages all senses.
The project titled Vale (Latin for “farewell”) consists of multiple sculptural graves made from Mercedes hoods, wind sound effects, and the scent of gasoline, evoking regional traditions of memorial rituals. Selma Selman’s works emerge at the intersection of personal and social experiences: her Roma identity, her family’s history in metal scrap recycling, as well as her engagement with industrial materials and the experience of social marginalization, all profoundly shape her art.
The installation also ties into this year’s curatorial theme of Art Basel Parcours, which explores the concept of “second nature” — examining how our memories intertwine with societal conditioning. Selman’s work, upcycling discarded materials, is simultaneously an ecological, political, and emotional reflection that draws attention to the fragility of forgetting and collective memory.
The project is realized as a collaboration between ChertLüdde and acb Gallery.
