Bodies Coming Out (Előbújó testek) offers a new perspective on the work of Károly Hopp-Halász, drawing attention to the playful dialogue between the male body and geometric abstraction that runs throughout the artist’s oeuvre. The exhibition is structured around the Open Geometry (Nyitott geometria) series, begun in 1989, which can also be interpreted as a kind of act of “coming out” at the time of the political transition. Recognized as one of the “last constructivists,” Hopp-Halász occupies a pivotal place not only in the history of Hungary’s neo-avant-garde generation but also in the country’s queer past. His works reflect both a yearning for Western gay culture and free self-expression, and the self-censorship characteristic of the Kádár era, as well as the fraught moments of identity formation during the post-socialist transition years.
