Description

Márton Gresa (1993) presents his newest series of shaped paintings at his debut exhibition in the space of acb Attachment. The artist’s most recent cycle reflects on the digital visual and communication culture of our era, which completely redefined our perception of reality. Besides the visual elements, the textual inscriptions also have a very important role in the artworks: the enigmatic and imperative phrases, which can be familiar from marketing campaigns, ironically dismantle their own meanings. The multiple typographical games of Márton Gresa evoke the early years of digital aesthetics filled with optimism, while creating patterns out of the tautological text fragments. The exceptional painting practice of the artist also reflects on the toolkit of applied graphics. He designs the plans of his pictures on digital screens, and he paints them with the help of pre-fabricated overlapping stencils. However physically layered Gresa’s paintings are, their messages intentionally lack real depth, furthermore the meaning on their textual references can be also randomly substituted.

Márton Gresa graduated from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 2019. He established a common studio and project space Birdhouse with his colleague Dániel Kármán. He is also part of the art collective Birds of Cool which made its debut in the spring of 2022 at Q Contemporary, and later on they have also exhibited at MODEM, Debrecen. Márton Gresa’s first solo exhibitions were held in 2022 in Budapest and in Pécs.
