János Sugár
About the artist
János Sugár (1958) studied in the Department of Sculpture at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest in 1980 and 1986. During his studies, between 1980 and 1986, he was actively involved in the unofficial Hungarian art scene through exhibitions and performances with Indigo, an interdisciplinary art group led by Miklós Erdély. Sugár has participated in national and international exhibitions since 1984. In 1992, he exhibited at the documenta IX, Kassel, in 1996 at Manifesta I in Rotterdam. He completed an Artslink residency at the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1994, followed by fellowships at Experimental Intermedia in New York in 1997/98 and 1999. His films were screened in 1998 at the Anthology Film Archives in New York. In 2006, he received the Munkácsy Prize. Since 1990, he has been one of the founders and a professor of the Intermedia Department at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts.
