Lajos Csertő

About the artist

Lajos Csertő was born in 1943 in Kecskemét and finished his mechanical engineering studies in Dunaújváros, where he started working in the iron foundry. During the 1970s he also established his studio in this city, although he was working all around Hungary. In 1971 at a ceramic symposium in Siklós, he met István Gádor, an important figure of Hungarian modern ceramics, who greatly affected his artistic career. Csertő assisted with many of Gádor’s public works and exhibitions in the forthcoming decades. The young Csertő, who was more interested in the topic of space exploration than in arts, through the mediation of Gádor became familiar with such outstanding artists of the 20th century as Hans Arp, Constantin Brancusi and Henry Moore. The effects of the artists above are very traceable in the the late modernist aesthetics, structures and forms used by Csertő during his career.
